MANHATTAN, KAN. — Registration has recently opened for Kansas State University’s (KSU) Pet Food Workshop, as well as its Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Feed Industry Training program. Both courses will be held in August 2022 at the university’s International Grains Program (IGP) Institute in Manhattan.

The IGP-KSU Pet Food Workshop will occur Aug. 15 and will cover various topics in pet nutrition, including ingredient trends, nutritional requirements for cats and dogs, specialty treats, sensory and palatability testing methods and safety, as well as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) issues within the industry. The Pet Food Workshop will also include a lab session in which participants can complete formulation exercises for pet food recipes.

Speakers for the Pet Food Workshop include: Sajid Alavi, Ph.D., professor of grain science and industry, at KSU; Greg Aldrich, Ph.D., research associate professor, of grain science and industry, at KSU; Aulus Carciofi, Ph.D., professor at the college of veterinary and agrarian sciences at Sao Paulo State University (UNESP); Tim Hartter, project manager of corporate project services at Wenger Manufacturing; Martin Talavera, Ph.D., assistant professor at the sensory analysis center at KSU; and Galen Rokey, director of process technology at Wenger Manufacturing’s Companion Animal Division.

KSU’s FSMA Feed Industry Training program will be held from Aug. 23 to 25 in partnership with the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA). The interactive course will cover FDA animal food safety requirements. Participants in the course will receive a certificate of training from the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA), as well as the ability to develop an effective food safety plan that meets FDA regulations.

In conjunction with the FSMA Feed Industry Training program, KSU is also offering an optional HACCP course, through which participants will become certified by the International HACCP Alliance, on Aug. 25.
