SAN FRANCISCO — PetSmart announced June 14 it is making it easier for pet owners to receive pet products with on-demand delivery through a new partnership with DoorDash. The last-mile logistics platform will work with nearly 1,500 PetSmart stores across the United States to offer same-day delivery of pet food, supplies and accessories.

More than 11,000 PetSmart products will now be available on the DoorDash app for same-day delivery, as well as PetSmart.com.

"At PetSmart we understand our customers' needs are always evolving," said Will Smith, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at PetSmart. "We're delighted to partner with DoorDash to provide pet parents with access to the essentials they need, right when they need them."

Traditionally brick-and-mortar retailers — in the pet industry and other markets — continue to adapt to the increasingly omnichannel landscape, offering more digital resources and convenience capabilities to compete with online-exclusive retailers Amazon and Chewy.

According to Packaged Facts, e-commerce sales now make up 30% of total pet product sales in the United States, a number that could grow to 53% by 2025. Among pet owners that purchase pet products online, roughly 59% order from Amazon and 41% order from Chewy.

"As we continue to accelerate our entry into new categories to meet consumers' adapting on-demand needs, we are thrilled by the opportunity to continue to work with PetSmart to provide pet owners with all the animal essentials they need conveniently and reliably right on the DoorDash app," said Christopher Payne, president at DoorDash.

PetSmart isn’t the only pet industry company to partner with DoorDash in recent years. In May, Petco expanded delivery of fresh pet food and other pet products through the logistics platform after completing a successful pilot launched in September 2020. In June 2020, Merrick Pet Care, Inc. partnered with DoorDash to support local BBQ restaurants, animal shelters and to promote its BBQ-inspired wet dog food recipes for a limited time.

To commemorate its new partnership with PetSmart, DoorDash has partnered with Bubba Wallace, a NASCAR driver and dog owner, on a multi-platform marketing campaign including a 30-second television ad and additional video content online and through social media.

"As a new pet parent, I am so excited to see DoorDash partner with PetSmart to make same-day delivery of pet supplies a reality," Wallace commented. "Whether Asher is with me on the road or at home, the fact that I can now order him all his favorite treats and essentials and get them delivered on-demand is a gamechanger."

PetSmart products are also available through DashPass, which is DoorDash’s membership program offering unlimited free deliveries and reduced service fees through select stores.
