INDEPENDENCE, IOWA — General Mills will lay off 211 employees at its Blue Buffalo manufacturing plant in Independence on Oct. 6, according to the Iowa Workforce Development Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN). Local news station KWWL shared in May that the company announced it will shutter the facility by the end of this year.

According to KWWL, the facility produces Top Chews and Nudges brands of pet treats for General Mills. The plant was part of the company’s acquisition of Tyson Foods’ pet treat business in July 2021, which was completed for $1.2 billion in cash.

Iowa’s WARN system also shows six additional layoffs planned for the Independence pet treat facility effective December 1.
