SAN DIEGO — In partnership with Petco, Canidae has designed and launched the company’s first Kibble Refill Station in Petco’s Carmel Mountain Store in San Diego. The new program is intended to transform the way kibble is purchased by enabling pet owners to buy kibble through an in-store, self-serve merchandiser, using reusable kibble bags. Each reusable bag can hold up to 25 lbs of dry dog food. This program aims to eliminate plastic waste generated from traditional, single-use pet food bags.

Committing the resources to develop and launch this new initiative aligns with Canidae’s mission to “create a more sustainable world of goodness for pets, people, and our planet.”

At the Kibble Refill Station, the pet owner can choose between two of Canidae’s premium dog food recipes: Canidae Pure Salmon and Sweet Potato, made with premium proteins, and Canidae Sustain Cage-Free Chicken, made with responsibly sourced chicken.

The Canidae Kibble Refill Stations will be tested in additional Petco stores in Southern California by early 2022. Pet owners can pick up reusable bags at the participating Petco stores where Canidae’s Kibble Refill Stations are available.

Canidae said it chose to partner with Petco on this initiative because of Petco’s dedication to shaping a more sustainable future for pets and pet parents. In 2020, Petco eliminated more than 3.2 million single-use plastic bags across its owned brands and has committed to increasing its assortment of sustainable products to 50% by the end of 2025.

In addition to this new program with Petco, some of Canidae’s other sustainability efforts include sourcing regeneratively farmed ingredients from the company’s farming co-op initiative, using verified sustainable proteins and selecting packaging with post-consumer recycled content (PCR).
