Purina showcased new products across a variety of its brands during Global Pet Expo on March 20-22, 2019, some of which are already on the market and some that are coming later in 2019. The spread of new products represents overarching industry trends such as limited-ingredient food and treats, high-protein levels, functional nutrition, regionally inspired recipes, meat as the first ingredient and the inclusion of “superfoods.”

The manufacturer added a Superfood Blend kibble to its Beneful line, formulated with salmon as the first ingredient, chia seeds, cranberries and kale, and antioxidants and omega fatty acids. Additionally, the formula is available in three wet formulas, including beef and salmon with pumpkin, spinach and sorghum; chicken and oceanfish with apples, kale and millet; and lamb and trout with sweet potatoes and blueberries.

Purina’s Beyond brand introduced regionally inspired recipes, including two wet and two dry options for both cats and dogs. All recipes are grain-free and high-protein, free from corn, wheat, soy or artificial ingredients. Wet cat food formulas come in Alaskan Cod or Canadian Duck formulas, and wet dog foods include Alaskan Cod or Texas Beef. The two dry cat food varieties include Pacific Tuna & Lentil and Icelandic Arctic Char & Lentil, while the dry dog food options include Texas Beef & Lentil and Pacific Northwest Hake & Lentil.

Dog Chow released six flavors of wet, high-protein dog food with 40 grams of protein per can. Each complete and balanced formula contains chicken, beef, lamb or turkey and is free from artificial ingredients.

In the treat space, Purina’s Honest to Dog line debuted limited-ingredient, grain-free dog treats, in which meat is the first ingredient. They are available in four variations: crispy chicken with apples; crispy beef with blueberries; tender beef and chicken; and tender turkey and chicken. They are sold exclusively through Chewy.com.

Purina’s ProPlan SAVOR line introduced functional kibbles for dogs and cats to support immune and digestive health. Each formula includes high-quality meat, poultry or fish as the first ingredient, live probiotics and prebiotic fiber. The company also released a functional dog food formula for digestive health under its Purina One brand. The new dog food is enriched with probiotics and supports a strong immune system, healthy teeth and gums, muscle development and healthy skin and coat. This new product will be available this summer.
