VIENNA, AUSTRIA — Mondi announced its plans to invest nearly €65 million ($66.5 million USD) in three of its packaging facilities throughout Europe. The company will expand its Korneuberg facility in Austria, and Halle and Steinfeld facilities in Germany, increasing its capacity of pet food packaging.

According to Wood Mackenzie, a global research group, the European pet food market has significantly grown, thanks to a rise in pet ownership throughout Europe. To meet increasing demand for pet food products, Mondi is committed to providing manufacturers with sustainable packaging solutions.

“We take pride in being an innovative, agile partner for our customers,” said Dirk Gabriel, chief operating officer of consumer flexible at Mondi. “With this investment, we continue to take the lead in packaging solutions that are sustainable by design, especially in the pet food industry.”

Expansion of its Korneuberg facility will include new state-of-the-art equipment and machinery, as well as an expanded production area. The expanded facility in Austria will increase Mondi’s capacity specifically in pre-made retort stand-up pouches for wet pet food products. The company has also invested in its Halle and Steinfeld facilities, which includes new machinery to boost production and capacity of pre-made pet food bags.

The investment in its three production facilities is part of Mondi’s €1 billion ($1.02 billion USD) capital investment program to accelerate its growth and the overall growth of sustainable packaging. According to Mondi, the facility expansions will help it support new customers seeking to switch from non-recyclable packaging to more sustainable solutions.

“This investment also supports our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework which is focused on circular driven solutions, created by empowered people, taking action on climate,” Gabriel said. “With these projects, we’re increasing operational efficiency and reducing our own energy consumption while also connecting our production network.”
