HAGERSTEN, SWEDEN — PerkinElmer is partnering with several food safety industry experts to host a virtual Meat Analysis Webinar Symposium tomorrow, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. EDT.

The four-hour webinar will feature five speakers on key topics impacting the meat processing industry. The event will include a 30-minute Q&A “lunch break” session, and participants will receive a $20 digital gift card for GrubHub.

Charlie Schmidt, product line leader for organic mass spectrometry for PerkinElmer, will discuss LCMSMS [liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry] as a food safety tool used to identify chemicals, such as beta agonists in pork, in various meat and poultry products. Schmidt’s presentation will discuss why LCMSMS is a good analytical tool for processors to determine residue drug levels or tolerances of veterinary drugs in food products.

Dr. B.J. Bench, director of food safety and quality assurance for Tyson Foods, Inc., will present on near infrared (NIR) technology and its use in promoting food safety for grain, meat and poultry processors and renderers. Bench oversees several segments food safety for Tyson, including wet pet nutrition products, palatants and animal feed blends.

Dr. Jianghong Meng, director of the Joint Institute for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition, as well as the Center for Food Safety and Security Systems, will discuss microbiological analysis of foodborne pathogens. Meng will present on recent advancements for sample processing and testing, as well as recommendations for future improvements.

Dr. Keith Belk, professor and head of Colorado State University’s department of animal sciences, will speak on global nutrition availability and the global food supply in terms of safety and foodborne illnesses. Belk will focus on understanding the food microbiome and techniques to help improve food safety systems based on sanitation and preventive management.

Robert Halstead, sales manager for PerkinElmer’s food safety division, will also speak during the webinar.
