ROLLE, SWITZERLAND — ADM opened a new research and development (R&D) center on June 19 focused on advancing research on animal microbiomes and developing health and wellness products for pets, livestock and aquaculture.
At the facility, ADM researchers will conduct innovative, pre-clinical research to tackle challenges of using biotics and other fermentation-derived ingredients that support the health and wellbeing of pets and livestock. Located in Lausanne, Switzerland, the facility spans 1,600 square meters (17,222 square feet).
According to ADM, the global biotics animal feed market was worth an estimated $5.2 billion in 2024. The gut microbiome has been linked to immune, digestive and nutrition absorptive functions in animals, impacting their overall health. The microbiome has been shown to affect animal protein production and resource usage across livestock.
Additionally, when it comes to pets, many pet owners are seeking out microbiome-supporting solutions to support their overall health. According to data from ADM, 84% of pet owners in 22 countries claim they are interested in products that may help increase the lifespan of their pets.
“We are seeing significant growth in the global pet and farm animal microbiome market, as farmers and pet owners alike seek science-backed nutrition solutions to support the health and wellbeing of their pets and livestock,” said Nuria Miquel, Ph.D., senior vice president and chief science officer at ADM. “We are proud to launch this state-of-the-art research and development center, uniquely dedicated to microbiome research for pet and farm animal health and wellbeing, with the flexibility to adapt to emerging research demands.”
As interest in functional ingredients for pets rises, ADM R&D has conducted studies on the effects of pre-, pro- and postbiotics on pet wellness. In fact, the company recently conducted research on its postbiotics, finding benefits on metabolic health in adult dogs and gut health function in adult cats.
“The center will deploy cutting-edge scientific and technological tools to increase our understanding of the role of the gut microbiome in broader pet and animal health, building on our existing work in both human and animal nutrition, and support our development of science-backed microbiome solutions to bring to market for our customers,” Miquel said. “It represents a significant step forward in our purpose to advance animal wellness through science and innovation.”
