BOULDER, COLO. — The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) launched a new tool — Annual Benchmark Assessment — to help pet product and pet food industry companies assess and enhance their environmental, social and governance practices. The tool is available to any company in the pet industry, from ingredient suppliers and manufacturers to brands, retailers and service providers. 

The Benchmark Assessment includes a series of multiple choice and short answer questions to examine a company’s sustainability strategy, environmental reporting, materials and products, governance, workforce, value chain and customer engagement. By answering the questions, companies can get a view of their current sustainability practices and use the results to build an action plan targeting impact and efficiency. The questions also provide insights on risks and opportunities and can help businesses strengthen employee and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, PSC members will receive a free, personalized session to identify a company’s strengths and improvement areas to develop an action plan.

“We know that building a more sustainable pet industry takes all of us,” said Jim Lamancusa, chief executive officer of PSC. “Our new Benchmark is designed to make it easier for every company to understand their sustainability efforts and take meaningful next steps. We’re proud to open this tool to the entire pet community because real progress only happens when we work together.”

The assessment aligns with leading global frameworks and guidance, like the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

By participating, companies will not only support their own environmental initiatives but also support the PSC’s State of the Industry Report, which provides insights on where the pet industry stands on sustainability and how environmental efforts have evolved over time.
