SASKATOON, CANADA — Ingredient supplier Bioriginal Food & Science Corp. recently announced the launch of its new cold-pressed borage oil, which is naturally rich in Omega 6 fatty acid. According to the company, the oil is highest, non-GMO source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) at 25%. In addition to human nutrition, the borage oil can be used in pet food.

The product launch marks the successful completion of Bioriginal’s selective breeding program, which was developed to maximize GLA content and crop yields while preserving the borage plant’s genetic integrity without the use of genetic modification. Through the isolation and propagation of favorable traits over multiple generations, the program achieved a breakthrough in agronomic performance, GLA potency and improved bioavailability, according to the company.

The resulting seed variety is patent-pending globally, providing Bioriginal with exclusive rights to this process. According to the company, this enables a consistent and potent source of GLA, allowing for reduced dosage requirements, streamlined formulation and enhanced functional benefits across a wide range of health and wellness applications, including pet food.

“Borage has been foundational to Bioriginal since our inception,” said Shannon Sears, president and chief executive officer of Bioriginal. “This launch reflects our continued innovation in developing science-backed, high-quality ingredients that set new standards for the industry and empower our customers to create more effective, trusted health solutions.”

Through a closed-loop system, Bioriginal ensures end-to-end control over every stage of production—from proprietary seed development and cultivation to harvesting, extraction and final downstream processing. This vertically integrated approach guarantees traceability, sustainability and bioactive efficacy, delivering a consistent high-quality product, according to the company.

Compared to other plant-based sources of GLA — such as evening primrose and black currant oils, which typically contain only 10% to 15% GLA — borage oil has long been recognized as the most potent natural option, according to Bioriginal. However, its application has been constrained by supply inconsistencies and variable product quality.

Bioriginal’s borage oil addresses both potency and purity, delivering a naturally high GLA level and a non-GMO profile, according to the company. This allows the supplier to offer formulators a more efficient, consistent and cost-effective solution that is also a clean-label ingredient that meets the growing demand for transparency, sustainability and natural sourcing. It can be used it pet nutrition products that target skin and coat health, as well as mobility.

Bioriginal will debut the new oil at Vitafoods Europe, held May 20 to 22 in Barcelona.
