PARIS — Insect ingredient producer Innovafeed shared April 25 that it has been listed in the new Avoided Emissions Platform (AEP) database, a global initiative that aims to unify the measurement of Avoided Emissions (AE) to help reduce overall carbon emissions.

AEs help quantify positive climate impact, but inconsistent methodologies across industries can hinder credibility and compatibility. To tackle this, the AEP was launched by Quantis, Robeco, Mirova, Edmond de Rothschild AM and I Care by BearingPoint and is supported by more than 30 partners. By offering a curated database of products, services and technologies, the platform seeks to bring transparency and harmonization in measuring avoided Scope 4 emissions across 65 different industries, from energy and real estate to agriculture and food production.

As a contributor to the AEP, Innovafeed helped develop the insect-based solutions data set within the database, demonstrating the environmental benefits of insect proteins, oil and frass in the production of sustainable animal feed, pet food and agriculture.

“Insects are a forward-looking, measurable and high-impact solution for transforming our agri-food system. Through our circular model, we upcycle agricultural byproducts into sustainable ingredients, significantly reducing CO2 emissions,” said Clément Ray, co-founder and chief executive officer of Innovafeed. “The AEP represents a crucial milestone in providing the most up-to-date data on the real-world impact of our solutions.”

The company joined the AEP as a result of several years of collaboration with Quantis, an environmental consultancy specializing in life cycle assessments.

“Environmental impact must be assessed using common, robust methodologies,” said Pierre Collet, global footprint lead at Quantis. “The AEP embodies this collective ambition by standardizing the measurement of avoided emissions, it strengthens the credibility of climate solutions — like Innovafeed’s — and helps channel financial flows toward the most virtuous companies.”

According to Innovafeed, accurate measurement of companies’ environmental contributions is becoming vital for stakeholders, as well as consumers. By offering a transparent, science-based framework for measuring AEs, the AEP helps companies and investors identify and support effective climate solutions.

Innovafeed’s inclusion in the AEP also highlights the insect protein industry’s role in supporting environmental initiatives.

“This initiative marks a foundational step for the European insect protein industry,” said Christophe Derrien, secretary general of the International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed. “The AEP’s work provides scientific validation of the insect sector’s potential as a lever for emissions reduction in agriculture and food — a critical issue for the European Green Deal.”
