OLYMPIA, WASH. — On March 1, Wild Coast LLC, known as Wild Coast Raw, issued an expanded recall of its Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw cat food product due to potential contamination with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
In February, the company originally issued a recall of the formula for lots #22660 and #22664 after the lots tested positive for HPAI by the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ODVL) at Oregon State University and the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) at the US Department of Agriculture. In addition to these lots, the recall now includes lots #22653, #22641, #22639 and #22672 with a best buy date of 12/25.
The formula is available in 16-oz and 24-oz packaging and comes frozen. It was distributed to pet food retailers in Washington and Oregon.
Pets with avian influenza infections may have a fever, lethargy, low appetite, reddened or inflamed eyes, discharge from the eyes and nose, difficulty breathing, and neurological signs like tremors, seizure, incoordination, or blindness. Felines have been found to be very sensitive to HPAI compared to canines, with many becoming severely sick and even dying.
To date, no human infections have been identified among people who have handled the raw pet food products.
