STATESVILLE, NC. — Blue Ridge Beef recently recalled 5,700 lbs of its Natural Mix frozen dog food due to contamination with Salmonella.
On Jan. 8, samples of the product were collected by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and were tested by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Protection Laboratory. Following this, Blue Ridge Beef was then notified by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on Jan. 27 that the product tested positive for Salmonella.
The affected product has a lot number of N25/12/31 and a UPC of 854298001054. Natural Mix frozen dog food is packaged in clear plastic, 2-lb chubs. The product was distributed between Jan. 3 and Jan. 24 and sold at retailers primarily in Virgina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Rhode Island.
The FDA is urging consumers to either return the product to retail stores or discard. Salmonella can affect pets and there is also a risk to humans handling contaminated products.
