NEW HAMPTON, NY. — Balchem Corporation, a specialty ingredients company, acquired Cardinal Associates, Inc., which operates as Bergstrom Nutrition, on Aug. 30. Based in Vancouver, Wash., Bergstrom Nutrition is a science-based manufacturer of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM).

Bergstrom Nutrition produces OptiMSM®, a brand of MSM offering high quality and purity. OptiMSM is the only brand of MSM with a GRAS designation, according to Bergstrom Nutrition.

“We are very pleased to join such a high quality, scientifically driven organization as Balchem,” said Adrian Polliack, president and chief executive officer of Bergstrom Nutrition. “OptiMSM® aligns well with Balchem’s already robust portfolio and complements their strategic health benefit platforms. Joining Balchem allows for accelerated growth and market reach, and we look forward to working together with the Balchem team.”

MSM is a widely used ingredient that can provide high nutritional value and functional benefits. According to Balchem, scientific evidence shows that MSM can support joint health in sports nutrition, skin and beauty, healthy aging and pet nutrition industries.

For example, Bergstrom’s branded MSM ingredient can be used in pet supplements. OptiMSM is currently used in several Zesty Paws supplements, including its latest Vet Strength supplements for dogs.

“We are excited to welcome Bergstrom Nutrition to Balchem,” said Ted Harris, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Balchem. “As the MSM market leader, Bergstrom Nutrition has excelled in advancing the science and presence of MSM globally. The addition of OptiMSM® to our portfolio provides a synergistic scientific advantage in Balchem’s key strategic therapeutic focus areas such as longevity and performance and is a strong fit with Balchem’s specialty, science-backed mineral products. We look forward to expanding marketplace opportunities together.”

Bergstrom Nutrition will be included in Balchem’s Human Nutrition and Health division and integrated into its Minerals & Nutritions segment.
