SILVER SPRING, MD. — On Aug. 5, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Darwin’s Natural Pet Products’ cat food has been associated with illnesses in three kittens. Samples of the raw cat food were found to test positive for Salmonella.

The impacted products are Darwin’s Natural Pet Products’ Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Chicken Recipe for Cats, with a lot code of 9116 and manufacture date of May 2, 2022; and Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Turkey Recipe for Cats, with a lot code of 9121 and manufacture date of May 4, 2022. The FDA is urging consumers to discard the impacted products.

Following three reported Salmonella illnesses in kittens, the FDA analyzed unopened samples of Darwin’s raw cat food formulas, finding Salmonella Typhimurium and Kentucky in the Chicken recipe and the Salmonella Typhimurium in the Turkey recipe.

“The FDA is issuing this alert because these two lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products cat food represent a serious threat to human and animal health,” the administration explained in its consumer alert. “Because these products are sold and stored frozen, the FDA is concerned that people may still have them in their possession and feed them to their pets.”

The administration contacted Arrow Reliance Inc., the manufacturer of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, recommending the company to issue a voluntary recall. According to the FDA, Arrow Reliance has failed to issue a recall and notify the public.
