LANSING, MICH. — Neogen Corporation broke ground on the expansion of its food safety facility in Lansing on July 20. The company has invested $70 million into the expansion, which is estimated to take 12 to 14 months to complete.

Lansing’s Mayor Andy Shor joined John Adent, president and chief executive officer of Neogen, as well as several board members and executives of Neogen at the ground-breaking ceremony.

“Neogen’s $70 million investment in Lansing will further Michigan’s leadership in the life sciences and agribusiness sectors,” said Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “This new manufacturing facility will expand Neogen’s footprint in Lansing and create up to 100 new good-paying jobs for Michiganders. Michigan’s future is bright because of our hardworking, talented people and our innovative businesses, and investments like today’s by Neogen will help us continue moving our state forward. I will work with anyone to keep growing our economy, creating good-paying jobs, and investing in every region of our great state.”

The facility expansion will include the construction of a three-story manufacturing plant located near Neogen’s existing facilities in Lansing. The plant will be 175,000 square feet and will house manufacturing and laboratory equipment to conduct testing of new food safety products.

Neogen’s expansion is supported by the Lansing Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP), the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF).

The facility expansion follows Neogen’s acquisition of 3M Food Safety in December 2021.

“Neogen is proud to call Lansing our corporate headquarters, and we are so happy to continue growing with the city that helped build us into the global company that we are today,” Adent said. “This year, as we celebrate our 40th year of operations, we also celebrate a number of big steps forward for our company. This expansion, along with the merging of 3M’s Food Safety business with our existing operations, will lead Neogen into a new era of growth. I want to thank the city of Lansing and the greater Lansing area for continuing to support Neogen, and we are excited to continue growing together.”

According to the company, the expansion will create 60 to 100 new jobs, increasing Neogen’s employee base to about 750. New positions will range from managers and supervisors to automation and quality technicians, operators, engineers, and chemists.

Construction on the facility will officially begin September of this year, with full completion expected in December 2023.

Neogen manufactures safety solutions for the human and animal food industries with a focus on disinfectants and rodent and insect control solutions for use in food production facilities, as well as other animal safety products. The company offers a variety of equipment, including pathogen and mycotoxin testing and sanitation and hygiene tools, food quality control solutions and more.
