Hill’s Pet Nutrition has voluntarily recalled a number of its canned dog food products for possibly containing elevated levels of vitamin D. The US Food and Drug Administration confirmed the elevated vitamin D levels were due to a supplier error. The affected products were distributed nationwide. None of Hill’s dry foods, cat foods or treats were affected.

Fifty-four lots of Hill’s canned dog food was affected by the recall, including products from its Prescription Diet and Science Diet lines. View a comprehensive list of recalled Hill’s canned dog food products.

The manufacturer made this statement about the recall: “Hill’s has identified and isolated the error and, to prevent this from happening again, we have required our supplier to implement additional quality testing prior to their release of ingredients.  In addition to our existing safety processes, we are adding our own further testing of incoming ingredients.”

The FDA warns consumers who purchased the products with the specific lot codes listed to stop feeding and dispose of it immediately. Consumers may return unopened cans to the place of purchase for a refund.
