An investigation of a multistate outbreak of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Reading infections linked to raw turkey products has been updated by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), upping the total affected to 164 people across 35 states. Initially, the outbreak was linked to 90 reported cases in 26 states, three of which reported falling ill after being exposed to raw ground turkey pet foods.

Since the outbreak in July 2018, 63 people have been hospitalized and one death has been reported in California. The CDC continues to investigate cases to determine exact sources but reports the Salmonella Reading strain was identified in samples of raw turkey pet food in Minnesota, as well as may other facilities handling live turkeys and raw turkey products in several states, including 22 slaughter and seven processing establishments. A single, common supplier of raw turkey products or of live turkeys has not been identified.
